The far South

I think the only reason for tourists to visit St. Bride’s, our next stop after spending a few days in St. John’s, is because of the nearby Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve on the far south end of the Avalon peninsula. An unremarkable village, spaciously shattered along the coast, its ragged edges hardly on a walking distance. I never saw anyone, except the good people from Walter Manning’s store, who owned the little grocery shop, the gas station and our accommodation. I’m not sure why I liked the place so much. Mostly because it was quiet, because the light was quiet too, grey and even after a day of harsh sunlight. I liked the crisp, cold air and the view over the ocean from our doorstep. I liked the vastness of the shore. Green, against purple-ish cliffs.
Having left the city felt good.
