The greenhouses in Frederiksoord are a former location of the Adriaan van Swieten Horticultural School, founded in 1884 to educate the sons of the colonists of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid (the Society of Benevolance). The Maatschappij was a Dutch private organization set up in 1818 to help poor families, mostly from the big cities, improve their living conditions by granting them farming land in the Northern part of the country. Frederiksoord in Drenthe was a ‘trial colony’, a grand social experiment in eradicating poverty. The greenhouses were in use until 2005, when the agriculture school moved to the city of Meppel.
I honestly tried to do this in colour. I didn’t dislike it, even the greens turned out okay I think, but I didn’t care for it either. I like discontinued places, but colour strips away every sense of ambivalence. The rusty tones, the dirt, the yellowish windows. Too obvious to my taste.
